Leon Schwartz
Leon Schwartz (1901–1989) was a klezmer and classical music violinist who was born in Karapchiv,[1] Ukrainian Bukovina and lived most of his life in New York City. He taught and acted as mentor to key klezmer revivalist Michael Alpert as well as Alicia Svigals.
He recorded an album Like in a Different World late in his life on the label Global Village and also appeared in a scene in the klezmer documentary 'A Jumpin Night in the Garden of Eden'.
According to klezmer fiddler Bob Cohen, this album offers "One of the best examples of traditional Jewish fiddling ... Leon’s range of styles and inter-ethnic repertoire reflects his region as well as his own Jewish upbringing."

- ^ There are two places called Karapchiv. Both are in Chernivtsi Oblast, which is within the former region of Bukovina: namely, Karapchiv, Hlyboka Raion and Karapchiv, Vyzhnytsia Raion. They are of similar size. There was fighting in the area during World War II, and records of where Schwartz came from may not have survived.
