Library Systems & Services (LSSI) is a private for-profit company that manages municipal libraries on an outsourced basis.[1] It is the United States largest library outsourcing company. LSSI runs 20 library systems in 80 locations. Its headquarters are in Germantown, Maryland.[2]

History

LSSI got its start in 1982 with the MINI MARC minicomputer cataloging system, and custom software development for libraries and other library support companies. It expanded into managing libraries at federal agencies. In 1997 it began operating public libraries after signing a contract with the Riverside County Library System in California. If it were considered a library itself and when ranked by number of branches it operates, it places immediately after Los Angeles County, New York City, Chicago and the City of Los Angeles.
