Martin Murphy Middle School is a middle school located in southern San Jose, California which educates students in 7th and 8th grade. Martin Murphy Middle School previously educated students in the 9th grade as well, though this is no longer necessary due to the new high school, Ann Sobrato High School. It is part of the Morgan Hill Unified School District. Founded in 1979, Martin Murphy serves a large geographical area ranging from South San Jose through the rural region of Coyote, California southward to Morgan Hill, enrolling approximately 850 students annually.
The school was significantly damaged in the Morgan Hill earthquake of April 24, 1984. Parts of the 10-wing collapsed, and the school was closed for the remainder of the school year. Murphy's students, at that time, went on a double sessions schedule along with Britton Middle School students, where Murphy students went to school in the morning, and Britton students went in the afternoons and evenings.
Students who attend the school range from upper middle class to low income, with the racial distribution of the school approximately 52% Caucasian, 33% Hispanic, 7% Asian, 1% American Indian/Alaskan, 3% African-American, 3% Filipino, and 1% Pacific Islander. As of 2005, 11% of those in attendance qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, in contrast to the state average of 39.4%
