Plot summary

The story is told through Sarah who is being interrogated by a detective. Sarah explains she will not be believed. The detective says that Sarah is a murderer, crazy or telling a truthful supernatural story. The film is told in flashback in segments:

David buys at auction an old sailing boat without first asking his wife Sarah. The family restores the ship and set off for Bermuda. Something strange happens when taking the group photo at the christening. Daughter Lindsay is glad Tommy is joining the crew. Ten-year-old Mary is happy because the boat is named after her. Mike is the last crewmate but he has had a one-time tryst with Sarah.

Mary tells her family she has met a friend on the boat. Some of Mary's Crayola drawings are sinister. First night out David finds Tommy at the bow of the boat injured and he attacks David with a knife. He is kicked off the boat. They learn later that Tommy has hanged himself and they find a drawing of a hangman by little Mary.

Lindsay asks her parents about something strange. Mary attacks her sister. Sarah was mysteriously locked into the cabin and has been having nightmares. Sarah wants to turn around and go home but David is insistent the trip continues. The parents search the history of the ship and find that over the years, the ship has been found three times abandoned with no one found alive.

David orders Mike to change course but it continues to sail to the point of no return. The ship runs out of gas. The satellite phone has been thrown overboard. Tommy's ghost appears and Lindsay jumps overboard with him. Mike attacks Sarah and David kills him but David dies too. The detective wonders why she didn't just not get off the boat. After the detective leaves, the movie ends asking whether Sarah is the surviving wife or the witch of the boat.
