Matomo[2], formerly Piwik (pronounced /ˈpwk/), is a free and open source web analytics application developed by Innocraft and a team of international developers, that runs on a PHP/MySQL webserver. It tracks online visits to one or more websites and displays reports on these visits for analysis. As of July 2017, Matomo was used by over 1,000,000 websites,[3] or 1.3% of all websites,[4] and has been translated to 54 languages.[5] New versions are released regularly.[6]

History

Matomo (Piwik) was released in late 2007 as a replacement for phpMyVisites, with full API support, a cleaner UI, modern graphs, better architecture and better performance.[7]

On 21 November 2008, SourceForge.net announced the availability of Matomo as a hosted application for developers.[8][9]

Matomo was selected SourceForge.net's Project of the Month for July 2009.[10]

In August 2009, Matomo was named among the best of open source enterprise in InfoWorld's 2009 Bossie Awards.[11]

In December 2012 Matomo started crowdfunding for requested new features.[12]
