Uploading a work of the United States federal government that is in the public domain

Use the following form to upload a work from the United States federal government. To upload a work from a different source, please return to Wikipedia:Upload.

Please read this important message first
This form should be used to upload an image that is a creation of the United States federal government that is in the public domain. Note that this does not apply to works of state or local governments. State government have other, different, laws applying to their works. Also note that images on government or government agency websites are not necessarily public domain and not necessarily works of the government itself; always look for copyright notices.

The Wikimedia Commons is a collection of freely licensed images that are automatically available to all Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedias in other languages.

Step 1. Choose an appropriate filename.
  • Change the destination filename to something descriptive. Don't use default filenames!
    Good: John Doe in 1997.jpg
       Bad: IMG0592.JPG
Step 2. Enter a description.
Write a clear description for the image you are uploading in the "edit summary" box.
  • Indicate what the picture is of, who took it, and when it was taken as accurately as possible.
  • Include the name of the article it should be in
  • Link to the source webpage or explain how you found and identified the work.

If works cannot be confirmed as created by the U.S. federal government, they will be deleted.

Step 3. Choose a license from the dropdown menu.

Choose the correct license for the image you are uploading. A complete list of license tags can be found at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/USA. If you are using one of these, choose "None selected" from the dropdown menu, then copy and paste the applicable license to the bottom of the summary box.
