Mendo Alão (11th century) was a Portuguese nobleman, Medieval knight who was Lord da Vila de Bragança.[1] He served as Monk in the Monastery of São Salvador de Castro de Avelãs.[2]

Biography

Alão was born in the 11th century in Brittany, he was possibly the son of the Count Alain de Nantes, a rich nobleman,[3] and an Armenian princess, belonging to the Kingdom of Vaspurakan.[4] His father was son of Alan II, Duke of Brittany.[5]

Mendo Alao de Bragança was married with an Armenian princess,[6] who was possibly the daughter of Senekerim-Hovhannes Artsruni.[7] In addition to having been lord of the lands of Bragança, he extended its dominions to Castile and León.[8] He and his wife had two children: Fernão Mendes de Bragança and Ouroana Mendes.[9]
