Monash Art, Design and Architecture

Monash Art Design & Architecture (MADA) undertakes teaching and research in the areas of interdisciplinary fine arts, multimedia, art theory, industrial design and architecture. Monash is one of few institutions in Australia to offer a range of interdisciplinary art, design and architecture courses within the one faculty. [1]
In 2008, the then Faculty of Art & Design launched a new course in architecture, the first new architecture course in Australia for 30 years,[2] resulting in the faculty being renamed MADA – Monash Art Design & Architecture. The foundation Dean of MADA was Professor Shane Murray.
In 2012 Melbourne artist Callum Morton was appointed to lead Fine Art[3]. Morton took the Department in a new direction with a central focus on interdisciplinary art practice. The Department would no longer have separate studios for photography, sculpture, painting, photomedia or drawing; instead students would work together in the one workspace. Morton believed that Contemporary Art is defined by it's interdsciplinarity and there was no longer a place in Contemporary art schools for the former focus on traditional disciplines. Under the new course structure, students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts would be taught by technicians in mixed open studios, with occasional critical review by academic staff. Morton also developed and introduced a new type of selection matrix called the Interdisciplinary Profile for assessing the interdisciplinarity of full time staff, an important aspect of the move to the fully interdisciplinary course structure.
The Faculty is located at Monash University's Caulfield Campus and incorporates:
