Monique Marie Ryan is an Australian pediatric neurologist and an independent candidate running in the Victorian seat of Kooyong.[2]

Medical career

Ryan graduated medicine at the University of Melbourne in 1991. Ryan then completed her pediatric training in Sydney, Australia and a neurology residency at the Children's Hospital Boston, in Boston, Massachusetts. Ryan also completed a neurophysiology fellowship at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts.[3]

Ryan serves as the director of the Neurology department at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Ryan has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has been a principal investigator on a number of clinical trials.[3] She is joint editor of Neuromuscular disorders of infancy, childhood, and adolescence, now in its second edition.[4]

Politics

Ryan was announced as the independent candidate to run in the 2022 federal election in the seat of Kooyong. Her candidacy came about after she responded to an advertisement in The Age calling for an independent to unseat Josh Frydenberg who suffered an 8% swing against him in the 2019 Federal election.[12] Ryan’s campaign is backed by Voices of Kooyong and receives funding from the Climate 200 group.[12] Her campaign was reported to have 1500 volunteers and more than 2000 donors, as at April 2022.[13]

Media

Her policies, campaign and comments have been reported in The Sydney Morning Herald[14][15] both for Kooyong and the 2022 Federal election. Her calls for action on climate change have been reported in Seven Media, and The Age.[16][17][18] The top concerns for the electorate of Kooyong were reportedly climate change and the environment. Polling in April suggested she was leading[19] one of the 'high profile' seats in the 2022 election.[20]

Personal life

Ryan is one of seven children and was raised in the Kooyong electorate. She lives in Hawthorn with her husband Peter, two step-children and a son.[citation needed]
