Muharrem İnce (born May 4, 1964 in Yalova) is a Turkish politician. He was elected four consecutive times in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2015 as a Republican People's Party parliamentarian from his hometown. For 2 terms he was the Republican People's Party's (CHP) parliamentary group deputy chairman. Following the loss of 2014 Turkish presidential elections on August 18, 2014, Ince declared his candidacy for Republican People's Party Chairman in the 2014 extraordinary party convention, against the current chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu, resigning from his Deputy Leader position.[1]

Biography

İnce was born in the village of Elmalık in the province of Yalova as the son of Şerif and Zekiye İnce. His paternal grandparents originated from Thessaloniki in Greek Macedonia, his maternal grandparents originated from the Black Sea coast of Anatolia.[2] He graduated from Balikesir University, Faculty of Education, Physics-Chemistry Necatibey and worked as a physics teacher and a school principal. Later on he worked as the Head of Press of Yalovaspor. He was elected as the President of Atatürkist Thought Association, a secular organization that espouses the ideas of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. He is married with one child.[3]

Politics

İnce is known in Turkish politics as one of the most fiercely speaking voices of the main opposition since 2002, against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He became well known by his heated speeches that have seen immense popularity on the Internet.[4]

Following the election of CHP parliamentary group leaders Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Hakkı Suha Okay as party leader and deputy leader respectively, İnce ran for the group leadership and was elected with 58 votes.[5] He was re-elected in 2011 and 2013 and before resigning in August 2014.[6][7][8] He was replaced by Levent Gök.[9] On March 30, 2014, Turkey held municipal elections, and the elections in Yalova were won by İnce's opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP). However, AKP cancelled the elections in Yalova to hold a re-election in the city. İnce played a crucial role in the process and CHP's candidate, Vefa Salman, won the second election as well.[10] On August 18, 2014, İnce declared his candidacy for CHP Chairman. If he wins, he will be the Leader of the Main Opposition in Turkey.
