Mullen is a village in Hooker County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 491 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hooker CountyTemplate:GR.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), all of it land. Mullen was named after Charles D. Mullen of Lincoln. At that time Mr. Mullen was Chief Clerk for Mr. D.E. Thompson, Division Superintendent of the CB&Q Railroad.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 491 people, 236 households, and 139 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,307.8 people per square mile (498.9/km²). There were 309 housing units at an average density of 823.0/sq mi (314.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.78% White, 0.41% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.

There were 236 households out of which 22.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% were non-families. 39.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the village the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 3.7% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 28.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $26,989, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $25,625 versus $16,375 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,532. About 2.8% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 11.5% of those age 65 or over.
