"NDA" is a song recorded by American singer Billie Eilish. It was released on July 9, 2021, through Interscope and Darkroom Records, as the fifth single from Eilish's second studio album, Happier Than Ever (2021). The song was co-written by Eilish and her brother Finneas, and produced by the latter.[1] Lyrically, the song speaks about Eilish's battle with fame and for privacy, as well as touching on her relationships.

A music video for "NDA" was released the same day, and was directed by Eilish. The one-shot video depicts Eilish walking alone on a desert road as cars race around her.

Background and release

Eilish's brother Finneas O'Connell (pictured) produced the track, also contributing to its writing.

On April 27, 2021, Billie Eilish announced her second studio album Happier Than Ever (2021).[2] The release of "NDA" made it the fifth single from the album, following the previous single "Lost Cause," which was released a month prior to "NDA" on June 2, 2021.[3] "NDA" was announced via an Instagram post by Eilish alongside a music video on July 1, 2021.[4][5] The song was co-written by Eilish and her brother, Finneas O'Connell, with the latter also producing the track. It was mastered by Dave Kutch, and mixed by Rob Kinelski, both of whom also served as studio personnel.[6]

Music video

The music video for "NDA" was directed by Eilish and uploaded on her official YouTube channel on July 9, 2021.[7][8] The one-shot video features Eilish walking alone at night on a desert road as 25 stunt drivers race around her.[7][9][10] In an interview with Apple Music, Eilish revealed that this was not the original concept for the music video, and that the original was scrapped due to complications.[10]

Variety's Chris Willman saw the music video as a continuation of Eilish's "trademark mordant humor and blunt language."[11] Rolling Stone's Althea Legaspi likened the trust between Eilish and the drivers to that associated with a non-disclosure agreement, after which the song is named.[7]

Composition

"NDA" is a minimal, pulsating trance-like[12] pop[13] and hyperpop[14] song, featuring atmospheric synths, sub-bass, and Eilish's doubled whispery vocals in a "sparse, chiming production".[15] Savannah Roberts of Capital FM regards that the song "taps into Billie's experimental vein",[15] while Gigwise's Vicky Greer deemed the singer to be "returning to the darker alt-pop".[16] Lyrically, she sings about her fame, privacy, relationships and stalkers.[15][14]
