The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park (German: Naturpark Nagelfluhkette) is a cross-border nature park between the German region of Allgäu and the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. The nature park encompasses the area of the three Nagelfluh chains of the Allgäu Nagelfluh ridges. It is the first cross-border nature park between Germany and Austria. The Nagelfluhkette was awarded the status of a nature park in 2008.[2]

Geography

The nature park covers 24,700 hectares in the district of Oberallgäu and 16,300 hectares in the adjacent Bregenz Forest, which amounts to a total of around 410 km2. Six communities in Oberallgäu and eight communities in Vorarlberg joined forces for this project.

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park covers a large part of the Allgäu Prealps west of the Iller. It stretches from Immenstadt and the western slopes of the Iller Valley in the east, Großer Alpsee, Constance Valley with Ach and Oberstaufen in the north to the Hirschberg range (already close to the Bregenzer Pfänder) in the west. In the south, it borders on the Bregenzer Ach river, Hirschgundtal and Rohrmoostal near Oberstdorf, up to the slopes of the Hochifen. Its core area is formed by the eponymous Nagelfluhkette of the Hochgrat with Hochhäderichzug, to the north lies the Prodel-Kojen stratum ridge, to the south the Hörner Group (Riedberghorn group).

The park stretches from the valleys of the Iller river and Bregenzer Ach river to the summit of the Hochgrat at 1834 m (culmination point in the southern tip of the municipality of Sibratsgfäll at 2050 m). The area has a height difference of 1400 m in a very small space, which is one of the reasons why the landscape is so varied.

Geology

The nature park is named after the Nagelfluh conglomerate.[3] The conglomerate consists of river pebbles that have been baked into a conglomerate. It looks like nails have been driven so deep into the rock that only their heads are sticking out.[2]

Fauna and flora

The nature park is rich in flora and fauna. For example, it is home to the Black grouse, the imposing Golden eagle, the rare Apollo butterfly and to a wide variety of orchids and gentians.[2]

Activities

The nature park centre AlpSeeHaus in Bühl/Immenstadt is a contact point for information and adventure offers all about the nature park.[2]

In winter, the mountains of the nature park are a destination for snowshoe hikers, tourers and nature lovers. In summer, the nature park is popular for hiking tours and guided themed hikes.[4]
