Neda Ukraden (Serbian Cyrillic: Неда Украден, born 16 August 1950) is a pop singer born in Croatia, who grew up in Bosnia and is currently living in Serbia. Her professional career stretches back to 1967.

Early life

Ukraden was born in Glavina, a village near the small Croatian town Imotski. She was the daughter of Dušan (died 1997) and Anđelija.[1] She is ethnic Serb.[2] Her paternal family were surnamed Bojanić and Pavlović, until one of her ancestors "stole" a girl whom he married (ukraden means "stolen").[3] She lived in Imotski with her grandparents until age 2 when she relocated to Višegrad, in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. When she was in elementary school her family moved to Sarajevo where she lived until 1992 when the Bosnian War broke out. When the war started, Neda moved to Belgrade, Serbia.[3] Between 1992 and 1996 she also rented an apartment in Vienna, Austria.[2] Her family house in Imotski was mined during the war, according to her.[2]

Respecting the wishes of her father, she attended University of Sarajevo where she successfully completed degrees in Law, Philology, and the English language. It was only at the age of seventeen that she started singing in 1967.

Personal life

Ukraden was married to director Milan Bilbija and together they had a daughter named Jelena.[4] Bilbija died 30 January 2013 in Montenegro.[5] Ukraden did not attend his funeral.[6]
