Nick Willing is a director, writer and producer of films and television programs, such as Alice in Wonderland, Photographing Fairies and Tin Man.

Son of Portuguese born painter Paula Rego and English artist Victor Willing, Nick was brought up in the fishing village of Ericeira on the coast of Portugal. At the age of 12 he was moved to a boarding school in Dorset, England where he started making animated films. It was there that he made the short film, “The door to door salesman” that got him into the National Film and Television School in 1979 at the age of 18.

When he graduated in 1982 he made an animated concert film for the pop band “the Tourists”. This led to a slew of music videos for bands such as The Eurythmics, Bob Geldof, Swing Out Sister, Toyah, Spear of Destiny, Debbie Gibson, Kirsty MacColl, Kim Appleby, Tony Banks and Nik Kershaw.

Throughout this period he was also writing screenplays, and in 1996 his adaptation of Steve Szilagi’s novel “Photographing Fairies” was financed by Polgram Filmed Entertainment. “Photographing Fairies” was a considerable critical success and won several awards including the Méliès d’Or in 1998.

“Alice in Wonderland” followed with a stellar cast which included Whoopi Goldberg, Sir Ben Kingsley, Robbie Coltrane, Martin Short, Peter Ustinov, Gene Wilder, Ken Dodd, Christopher Lloyd, George Wendt and Miranda Richardson. Alice was made for NBC television in 1999 and won 4 Emmys.

Nick has developed a reputation as a fantasy film maker. His background in design and animation coupled with his knowledge of special effects have given his work a distinctive visual flair.
