The Nuneaton News, formerly the Evening News and the Heartland Evening News is a part paid for, part free newspaper serving Nuneaton, North Warwickshire, Hinckley and surrounding areas. Based in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, it is paid for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, whilst the Wednesday edition is delivered free in the area.
Founding
The paper was founded in 1992, following the decision of the new owners of the Nuneaton Evening Tribune to switch publication to a weekly free sheet and to create a Nuneaton edition of the Coventry Telegraph. The switch to weekly publication led to a downsizing of staff - some of which went on to found a new paper. The paper (at the time published by Nuneaton and District Newspapers Ltd) was the smallest independent newspaper in the country.
Ownership
The independent nature of the newspaper ended in 2006, when Staffordshire Newspapers Ltd (owned by Lord Iliffe) purchased the newspaper. The 'News' already had a working relationship with their new owners, as the paper was printed in Burton by the Burton Mail's publisher. In 2013, ownership passed to Local World, following the merging of assets of Northcliffe Media (from Daily Mail and General Trust) and Iliffe News and Media (from Yattendon Group).
