The history

Oakleigh House School started in 1919 and the school will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019.[1] For the first seventy-five years of its existence, the school was privately owned, growing in numbers from 25 to 200. In 1995, it became part of the Ffynone House School Trust and in 2007 joined the Cognita Group of Schools.

In 2016, the School received the NACE Cymru Challenge Award.[2]

Facilities in Oakleigh House School

Facilities in Oakleigh House include a large hall, several outdoor play areas, nursery, IT rooms and on site catering. Classes in the School are small as is overall school size with around 150 pupils.

Pupils follow a defined curriculum which incorporates key elements of the Foundation Phase during early years but is not bound by it.

In addition to academic classes, pupils have access to sporting activities, together with debating, music, drama, dance as part of the curriculum and as extra-curricular activities. Some extra-curricular activities may be charged an additional fee.

The Early Years Department and Years 1 & 2 make full use of the school grounds, which include two large play areas both of which have all weather surfaces. In addition, there is an outdoor classroom and nature area. From Year 3 pupils travel a short distance to Swansea University Sports Centre for their twice-weekly games lessons, where they have exclusive use of the indoor track and outdoor multi-purpose pitches. They also have swimming lessons at Wales National Pool where pupils have access to the 25m and 50m pools. Adjacent to the school is Cwmdonkin Park. The Park is closely associated with Dylan Thomas and has recently benefited from an extensive regeneration programme. The school makes good use of the park whether for exploration walks, using the tennis courts or learning to play bowls.[3]

Sport

Oakleigh House offers a variety of extra curricular activities along with various in school and after-school clubs. Fixtures against other schools, both independent and state schools, take place on a regular basis.

Sport is enhanced by the many extra-curricular activities that take place during lunch breaks and after school. Pupils take part in netball, hockey, cricket, football, rugby, athletics and general fitness training. Team sports are represented at all levels. The pupils regularly travel to schools across South Wales for away matches and are able to play their home fixtures on our astro turf pitch. Pupils have access to the facilities of Swansea University.[4]
