Ole Peter Hansen Balling

Ole Peter Hansen Balling (13 April 1823 – 1 May 1906[1]) was a Norwegian portrait painter who emigrated to the United States and worked in New York City from 1856 until his death in 1906.
Born in Christiana (now Oslo) in 1823, Balling studied painting in Berlin and Copenhagen.[2] He joined the Danish army in 1848, then emigrated to the United States in 1856. He commanded the 145th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War and painted many of the Union generals in that conflict.[2] He later returned to Norway and painted Norwegian naval officers.[2]
