Operation Swift Retort (Urdu: آپریشن سوئفٹ ریٹارٹ) is a Pakistani Urdu-language animated short film based on the 2019 Jammu and Kashmir airstrikes, directed by DJ Kamal Mustafa.[1] The film aims to reveal the truth behind India's Balakot strike deception and the aftermath involving the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).[2] This includes the PAF claiming to have shot down Indian fighter jets and capturing an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot named Abhinandan Varthaman. In 2022, on the anniversary of the operation, several Pakistani media channels broadcast a screening of the film that was played live.[3]

Development and production[edit]

The original concept for the film was obtained by Kamal Mustafa in 2019 after the PAF claimed to have shot down two Indian jets.[4] It was the first kind of animated film in Pakistan to be released on dogfights, jetfights, and military responses.[5] The Pakistan Air Force has given this operation the name "Operation Swift Retort". Several high-profile institutions, such as ISPR and the Pakistan Air Force, granted permission to start film production in May 2019.[6] The film was not funded by any organization and was produced as a non-profit project. The total budget of the movie was $700, which was entirely self-funded by the filmmaker. The film was dedicated to Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor (DG ISPR) at that time.[7][8]

Critical reception[edit]

In an article in Geo News the film "Operation Swift Retort" was the first animated film from Pakistan based on a dog fight.[9] An online movie review platform called UK Film Review says the movie was produced exclusively for their country without any financial compensation.[10]
