Otis the Aardvark was a foul-mouthed, arrogant puppet presenter on Children's BBC. Otis mainly presented the afternoon links on BBC One alongside the main CBBC presenters, particularly Kirsten O'Brien towards whom the brunt of his anger was directed, although an intimate relationship between the two was often alluded to[by whom?].
Otis was thought to be inspired from the 1992 Children's BBC idents which ended with a voice proclaiming "Tell That aardvark it's a wrap". These idents led to much speculation as to what the phrase meant. However, these idents were dropped just before the character of Otis appeared in late 1994.
Dave Chapman was the puppet master. He also performed in a number of other Children's BBC programmes for both incarnations, notably Narcoto The Cat from Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow.
When Fully Booked moved to Sundays on BBC2, the extended Saturday CBBC was renamed Saturday Aardvark, with Otis being the main star.
After leaving CBBC in late 1999 over a pay dispute, Otis' career went into a nosedive. He appeared unannounced once on a puppet based quiz show and led to the studio being evacuated. He hanged himself in 2008. Before the puppet was finally laid to rest, a distraught Kirsten O'Brien attempted to climb into his coffin with him. She was held back by a temporarily reanimated James Stewart and former Cream bassist Jack Bruce. An announcement was given claiming that the character had gone to work at Sky News, although Otis made appearances on other CBBC shows including Insides Out and Live and Kicking until 2001. Otis was replaced by another puppet called Emlin the Gremlin, who proved to be universally despised.
On December the 28th 2007, Otis reappeared on a special 'puppet' edition of The Weakest Link for the BBC. However he was voted off in the second round after calling one of his fellow panellists, the Incorruptible Corpse of Norman Wisdom a "silly bastard".
A similar character named "Inseptimoth" with the same voice can be seen in online adult video podcast "Nuzzle and Scratch".
