Peggy Noland is an American fashion designer in Kansas City, Missouri. She has been a teacher in the Fiber Department at the Kansas City Art Institute since 2008.[1][2]

Biography

Noland is originally from Independence, Missouri.[3] She majored in Religious Studies at Rockhurst University,[2][4] then worked as a production manager for a New Delhi clothing company in 2006. On returning to Kansas City, aged 23, Noland opened a boutique in the Crossroads, Kansas City, called Peggy Noland Kansas City.[1] Kansas City's The Pitch awarded her with their Design/Fashion MasterMind Award in 2006.[5] In August 2009, Noland opened a second boutique for a month in Berlin, Germany with the help of the Kansas City Artists Coalition[6] and a grant from the Lighton International Artist Exchange Program.[1][7] She plans to open in another location in Berlin in 2010.

Her work uses bright colors, full-body leotards and patterns.[8] Her designs have been worn by several musicians, including Lovefoxxx from Brazilian band CSS,[9][10] Kianna Alarid from the Omaha, Nebraska band Tilly and the Wall,[9] Fischerspooner,[10] Chicks on Speed and The Ssion.[6] Actress Alia Shawkat has also bought one of her works.[9] In 2009, she worked with Bec Stupak.[1]

Her work has appeared in fashion and music magazines including WWD,[9] Elle, Elle Japan, Dazed and Confused,[1] Vogue, British Vogue, Nylon, Nylon Japan, Spin, Rolling Stone, and Missbehave,[11] as well as fashion blogs, like TeenVogue[10] and StyleBubble.[12] Peggy Noland's unique clothing has also been used by popular stars such as Rihanna and Miley Cyrus.[13]

Aesthetic

Peggy Noland's artistic style has been described as "white trash meets high class".[13] Her aesthetic is commonly referred to as a mixed style of meth addicts from her hometown in Independence, Missouri combined with an eccentric, Parisian old-lady. She is notorious for taking corporate logos and morphing them into an art form of their own. Her belief in consumerism and branding has led to a "mix of LA pop art and KC gutter-punk" She wears a very distinctive hairstyle: the hair is shaved on top, while leaving the back and sides long. She changed her style a few times, first having sides and back shaved, with long hair on top, since 2013 until now (2017) she only shaves the top bald.[14]
