The Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC) is a national, not-for-profit industry and technical association for plant and facility maintenance, reliability and physical asset management practitioners and professionals in Canada.[1]

Purpose

PEMAC’s mission is to improve its member’s professionalism, safety, performance, and outside recognition, by providing specialized training and certification, undertaking research, providing forums for the exchange of information and acting as a public voice for its members and the profession.

History

In 1989, PEMAC was born out of the concern and vision of two professional engineers and a small group of people involved in plant and facility maintenance and engineering at both the practitioner and management level, who shared their concerns. The concern was, and still is, that maintenance and physical asset management professionals were providing an essential service without significant recognition. The vision was to create a national association devoted to plant and facility engineering and maintenance, created by the plant and facility engineering and maintenance practitioners in Canada.

PEMAC Activities

Certification Program

In an effort to establish a clear set of standards for professional development in the field of maintenance management PEMAC has set about standardizing the training for practitioners and professionals across Canada in cooperation with various Colleges, Institutes and Universities through the Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) certificate program. Individuals wishing to use the "Maintenance Management Professional" (MMP) designation must complete a 225 hour training program made up of 8 courses, apply for certification from PEMAC and be a member in good standing of the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada. Prior learning recognition is available for up to 3 of the courses.

The MMP program has been recognized by Alberta Industry Training for the Blue Seal "Achievement in Business Competencies" program.[2] In addition both the Alberta Water Wastewater Operators Association [3] and the Ontario Water and Wastewater Certification Office[4] recognize courses in the program for Continuing Education Credits.

Regional Conferences

PEMAC organizes 2 - 4 day regional conferences with presentations and workshops on various aspects of the topic of physical asset management. [5]

Chapter Activity

Local chapters organize regular networking and professional development events.
