Porridge is a British sitcom written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, that premiered on BBC One on 6 October 2017 after the success of the pilot that aired in 2016 as part of the BBC's Landmark Sitcom Season. It is a sequel series to the 1974 show of the same name. The show features Kevin Bishop as Nigel Norman Fletcher, the grandson of Norman Stanley Fletcher from the original series, who is in prison for cyber crimes.

Production

In March 2016, it was announced that a sequel pilot to Porridge would air as part of the BBC's Landmark Sitcom Season, starring Kevin Bishop as Norman Stanley Fletcher's grandson and written by the original writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.[1]

After the success of the pilot, in October 2016, BBC One commissioned the show for a full series which went into production in January 2017.[2]

The show contains a number of affectionate references to the original series. For instance, the character of Joe Lotterby is named for Sydney Warren Lotterby OBE (born 30 November 1926), a British television producer and director, who was involved with producing the original series.[citation needed]
