Thirty thousand Israelites set an ambush of Ai overnight, and in the morning another Israelite force attack and then feign retreat, drawing the forces of Ai from the city. When Joshua raises his lance, the ambush strikes, thus surrounding Ai's forces. The entire city is burned and its inhabitants slaughtered, the king of Ai is hung on a tree, his body thrown into a pit.
