The two 9th-century Anglo-Saxon crosses, known as Sandbach Crosses, now stand in Sandbach's market place. Thought to have been brought to the town in the Middle Ages from an unknown site, they are first recorded there in 1585. They were thrown down, either after the Reformation or during the Civil War, with their parts being scattered as far away as Oulton and Tarporley. The crosses were reassembled and erected in their current location by the historian George Ormerod in 1816.
