Procranioceras is an extinct genus of Artiodactyla, of the family Palaeomerycidae, endemic to North America from the Middle Miocene epoch, 16.3—13.6 Ma, existing for approximately 2.7 million years.[1]

Taxonomy

Cranioceras (Procranioceras) skinneri was named by Frick (1937), as a sub-genus. It was reranked as Procranioceras by Janis and Manning (1998) and Prothero and Liter (2007). It was assigned to Cranioceras by Frick (1937); to Dromomerycidae by Janis and Manning (1998); and to Cranioceratini by Prothero and Liter (2007)[2][3]

Appearance

A single specimen of Procranioceras were measured by M. Mendoza, C. M. Janis, and P. Palmqvist and estimated to have weighed 250.9 kg (550 lb) in life.[4]
