R. Kannan (born Rajmohan on 21 July 1971) is an Indian filmmaker[1] and screenwriter. He made his directorial debut with the successful Tamil film Jayamkondaan starring Vinay Rai and Bhavana in 2008.

Career

Kannan started his career assisting director Manobala before joining Mani Ratnam in films including Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Ayutha Ezhuthu (2004) and Guru (2007).He directed his first film Jayamkondaan in 2008. Jayamkondaan revolved around an Information technology professional and his relationship with his step sister. The film opened to generally positive reviews. His second film, Kanden Kadhalai, was a remake of Imtiaz Ali's Hindi blockbuster, Jab We Met (2007). Featuring Bharath and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead, it was successful at the Box Office. He released Vanthaan Vendraan which has Jeeva and Taapsee Pannu. He remade Delhi Belly in Tamil as Settai starring Arya, Santhanam, Premgi, Hansika Motwani, Anjali & Nassar. Oru Oorla Rendu Raja is his fifth film. The Story is centered on a factory in Kayalpattinam (Thoothukudi) which explores the safety of labourers in factories being at jeopardy. It featured Vimal, Priya Anand and Soori. It was a noble effort by Kannan to have raised an awareness and caution to incorporate safety standards inorder to avoid any untoward incident that may harm the labourers' lives and lifestyle through this film. After the film's release, one of the most fatal incidents due to oversight in the Industrial safety measures happened at Ranipet Sipcot industrial estate in Vellore district when a tank of an effluent treatment plant collapsed on the compound wall of an adjacent factory where the employees were present. Ten workers died as a result of this incident.

Alangaaram will be the next feature film. Alangaaram is apparently Director Kannan's own script which he calls it to be his dream project & he has worked close to 2 years scripting for this film.

Family

Kannan married Madhanaa in 2009. They have a son named Arjun & a daughter named Laya Kannan.
