Raymonde April, OC (born 23 June 1953) is a Canadian contemporary artist, photographer and academic. Born in Moncton and raised in Rivière-du-Loup in Eastern Quebec, April now lives in Montreal where she teaches photography at Concordia University. She studied at several universities, specifically for art, and has been a photographer since the 1970s. Since this time, April's practice and work has influenced the development and growth of photography in Canada. In addition to photography, April also explored the influence of narrative on photographic images.
Early life
April was born in the early 1950s in Moncton, New Brunswick. Since 1985, she was taught photography at Concordia University. Since this time, her work has influenced the development of photography in Quebec and Canada.
Career
Raymonde April is known for her photography and academics.[1] She attended and now teaches at Condordia University, and has several of her artworks featured in many museums and solo shows. While her work is regularly seen in Canada, there are other museums around the world that are starting to gather much of her work.[citation needed] Eduardo Ralickas argues April's work is articulated around a scene between near and far, appearance and disappearance, making distance a key factor in mapping the territory of the symbolic and the imaginary.[2]

Awards
In 2003 she was awarded the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas award.[3] In 2005, she was received Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award for Art Photography from the Ontario Arts Foundation.[4][5]
In 2010, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for having "made a significant contribution to the evolution of photography in Canada".[6] In 2003, she was awarded the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas.
