"Rehab"
Song

"Rehab" is the eighth single taken from Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) in the US and the UK.[1][2] It was written by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Hannon Lane, with Timberlake and Timbaland contributing backing vocals in its bridge. As of November 25, the song has officially entered the Top 20 on pop radio.[3] On November 23 2008, she preformed this song at the 2008 American Music Awards.

Release

"Rehab" was released to radio on October 7, 2008.[4] "Rehab" had already been slated for release in August, 2008 in the UK but was pushed back due to the digital release of "Disturbia". Even without the official release yet, the song has been starting to pick up on pop radio as of the end of September. It has been played on New York City's Z100 late September. It was the fifth most added song to radio in Australia, on its first week of release.[5]

Critical reception

The song has received generaly negative reviews from critics. Bill Lamb from About.com was not impressed with the song, calling it "somewhat disappointing ... 'Rehab' simply sounds too much like "What Goes Around..." Part 2."[6]

Entertainment Weekly magazine gave the song a negative review, saying its "a joyless overdose of midtempo melodrama".[7]

Pitchfork Media called it a "slight but solid entry into the rapidly-expanding Timbalake catalog" though considered that "it's tough not to speculate how it might sound if Timberlake sang the whole thing rather than just the backing vocals. His falsetto is perfectly equipped to convey the track's plaintive, regretful sentiment. Rihanna, meanwhile...not so much".[8]

Music video

Rihanna and Justin Timberlake have filmed a music video for the song "Rehab" at Vasquez Rocks Park outside of Los Angeles on October 21, 2008. The director is Anthony Mandler. The video premiered on November 17th on MTV.com. The video uses the Radio Edit of the song.

The video starts with Rihanna on the hood of a car in the desert with a trailer near by, and Timberlake speeding towards her on a motorcycle. It proceeds to show Rihanna and Timberlake in several scenes together in the desert and inside the trailer. There are night and day scenes in the video, and different lighting and lens effects are used throughout, such as green and pink tints, and black and white scenes. The scenes with Timberlake and Rihanna are often conveyed as though Rihanna is seeing her ex (Timberlake) everywhere and all the time.
