Lieutenant Commander Richard S. Baron, United States Navy, was killed March 15, 1942 during the bombing of Cebu City, Philippines.[1] Prior to his death, he had received the Navy Cross for risking his life to recover classified documents during the bombardment of Cavite, Philippines.[2] His namesake, the USS Baron (DE-166), a destroyer escort, was commissioned July 5, 1943. The commissioning was witnessed and sponsored by his widow, Mrs. Anne P. Baron.[1]
