SFFL Showtime
The SFFL Showtime League established on 7 July 2023, is the largest co-ed semi-professional flag football league in Nigeria.[1] The league is played in a 7-on-7 coed format. The league was founded by Azeez Amida in September 2023 and plays a round robin league format. The top 6 teams in the tournament advance to the playoffs to compete for a place in the championship game called The Showtime Bowl. The winner of the Bowl is awarded with a cash prize, trophy and player rings. The league is led by the Commissioner, Adebare Adejumo.[2]
History
[edit]The SFFL Showtime League debuted with the SFFL All-Star Games on 17 September 2023 in Lagos, Nigeria.[3] The league currently has ten teams, each with a 30-man roster.[4] All the matches are played in one venue which is the Meadow Hall. The league was conceived as a community to showcase athletes ranging from the age of 18 years to 55 years and to create a captivating and entertaining experience for spectators.[5] The inaugural season kicked off with 10 teams.[6]
About the League
[edit]The SFFL Showtime plays a 7-on-7 coed format. Each team must field at least 3 female players on every play. The league is plays a modified version of the International Federation of American Football rule system. The league currently has 10 teams and they all compete over three stages of competition.[7]
- The regular season: each team competes in a round robin format. The top 6 teams based on win percentage advance to the playoffs stage.
- The Playoffs: 6 teams compete for a place in the Showtime Bowl.
- Showtime Bowl: the championship match is where the winner of the season is determined. Winners of the Bowl will win a custom trophy, championship rings and cash prize.[8][9]
