Saltley Academy (formerly Saltley School & Specialist Science College) is a mixed secondary school located in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham, in the West Midlands of England.[1]

History

Saltley School was previously a community school administered by Birmingham City Council. The school also gained specialist status as a Science College.

Saltley Academy opened as a grammar School in the 1920's, and was closed down when World War 2 broke out. Years afterwards, it was opened again as Saltley School. Saltley Academy was honored to have taught and hosted many famous figures.

In 2014 Saltley School was placed in special measures by Ofsted after a critical inspection report. The inspection had been undertaken after Saltley School had been connected to the Operation Trojan Horse scandal which affected a number of schools in Birmingham in 2014.[2]

Saltley School converted to academy status in March 2015 and was renamed Saltley Academy. The school is now part of the Washwood Heath Multi-Academy Trust which includes Brownmead Primary Academy and Washwood Heath Academy

In December 2015, Saltley Acdemy was proud to have Prince William, MP Liam Bryne and many other figures to witness the 'Football for Peace' Campaign which was hosted by the academy.

Since July 2016, Saltley Academy have been officially recognised by UNICEF as a ‘Rights Respecting School’ and granted the Level 1 award. They were the first Birmingham secondary school to receive the award. No school in the country has achieved the award as quickly as they did and they are now working towards Level 2.
