Sasakia charonda, the Great purple emperor, is a species of butterflies in the family Nymphalidae.
Size
- Wingspan of male: 50mm, female: 65 mm.
Range
Japan (from Hokkaidō to Kyūshū), Korean Peninsula, China, Northern Taiwan, Northern Vietnam.
Status
The national butterfly of Japan.
Habitat
Sasakia charonda is common in the forest. Adults feeds on honey-dew.
Habits
It is said to fly in the high canopy, only coming down to feed, and to get salt supply.
Host plants
The larvae of the species feed on plants such as :
- Japanese Hackberry (Celtis jessoensis)
- Celtis japonica
