Shabattai Kalmanovich was a KGB spy, who later became known in Russia as a concert promoter and basketball sponsor. He emigrated from the former Soviet Union to Israel in 1971 and in 1988 was jailed for spying for the KGB.[1] Following his release, he made his way to Sierra Leone, where he made a fortune in the diamond trade.[1] After his return to Russia, he promoted concerts for stars such as Michael Jackson and Liza Minnelli.[1] On November 3, 2009, Kalmanovich was assassinated by unknown gunmen in a passing vehicle as he was sitting in his car in Moscow.[1]
