Template:Infobox Indian jurisdiction Shahabad is a town in Gulbarga district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town can be subdivided into the following areas: Bazaar, the residential townships of Alstom and Jaypee Cements (formerly ACC or HMP), Bhankur/Shantnagar and Old Shahabad. Agriculture, limestone mines, boiler and cement production are the main areas of commerce. The river Kagina passes through Shahabad and is a major source of water for the town.

Geography

Shahabad is located at 17°08′N 76°56′E / 17.13°N 76.93°E / 17.13; 76.93[1]. It has an average elevation of 391 metres (1282 feet). City area is 7.80 km2, length of roads 32.50 km.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Shahabad had a population of 50,587. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shahabad has an average literacy rate of 57%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 48%. In Shahabad, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

Mount Carmel Convent School was one of the most well known, reputed and prestigious school during the 1980s and 1990s. Consisting of a large three-storied building with a large play ground lined with trees, it continues to function in what is now known as Alstom Colony.

Bal Vidya Mandir is also a well known English medium school, administered by the Central Railway Society. It is centrally located near the railway station and easily accessible.

Commerce

Shahabad is well known for its stones—called Shahabad stones. Almost all railway stations used to be tiled with the stones. Now due to modernization, most of the major railway stations are switching to other materials. Still Shahabad stones are among the most economical stones for tiling.

Alstom Projects India Ltd & Jaypee Cements (formerly owned by ACC and then by HMP Cements) are the two major factories located in the town providing employment to a majority of the population, either direct or indirect.
