Skybound Entertainment is an entertainment company founded by Robert Kirkman and David Alpert in 2010. It produces content for comic books, film, television, and other media.[1]
History
Kirkman created the company after he became a partner in Image Comics in 2008, as a corporate home for his extant creator-owned work and new projects.[2] It was the first new studio established in connection with Image Comics since the company was founded in the early 1990s, joining Highbrow Entertainment, Todd McFarlane Productions, Top Cow Productions, and Shadowline, each owned by another partner in Image Comics.
At the time of its founding, Kirkman announced plans to publish outside works – dubbed "Skybound Originals" – in exchange for a partnership stake in the properties.[3] Witch Doctor by Brandon Seifert and Lukas Ketner was the first Skybound Original published by the company, beginning in June 2011.[3]
The company's projects include the feature film AIR and the comic Outcast.[4] Outcast was released in June 2014, and received a series pickup for Cinemax with Fox International Channels attached as the studio.[5] Kirkman and Alpert serve as executive producers on both projects.[6][7]
Skybound Entertainment co-produced with Disney-owned Maker Studios Nerd Court, a play on the long-running TV series People's Court show, where participants present their fandom-related disputes for settlement by a judge.[8] The company partnered with Samsung to develop virtual reality content for Milk VR.[9]
Other comic book titles published by Skybound include The Walking Dead, the superhero-comic Invincible, fantasy adventure comic Birthright, the revenge drama Dead Body Road, and heist comic Thief of Thieves. Skybound also creates a wide range of merchandise, including tabletop card game Superfight, apparel, board games, and action figures.[10]
They worked in collaboration with PewDiePie for a Youtube Red exclusive original comedy-horror series, titled Scare Pewdiepie.
