Smyths Toys Superstores is a leading provider of children's toys and entertainment products with 70 stores throughout Ireland and the UK. The Irish superstore chain was founded c.1987 in Claremorris, Co.Mayo, and is the largest toy retailer in Ireland, claiming to have 60% of the €320M market.[1][2]
History
It is a family-run company, with four Smyths brothers (Anthony, Padraig, Liam and Thomas) running the business.[1][3] In the year ending March 2006, Smyths Toys Superstores employed 692 staff, had sales totalling €184M, and had profits of €6.2M, down from €11.7M the previous year.[4] Ten years earlier, the company had just four stores and sales of €20 million.[4] Smyths Toys Superstores operates 58 stores in total, 22 stores in the Republic of Ireland, 6 in Northern Ireland and a further 30 in England, Scotland and Wales.[2][5][6] The company is expanding heavily not just in Ireland but also in the UK.[1]
