"Something in the Way You Move"
Song

"Something in the Way You Move" is a song by English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding from her third studio album, Delirium (2015). The song will be serviced to contemporary hit radio in the US on 19 January 2016 as the album's third single.[3] It entered the UK Singles Chart at number 51.[4]

Background

Ellie Goulding released the lead single "On My Mind" from Delirium on 17 September 2015 (2015-09-17), which reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100[5] and number 5 on the UK Singles Chart.[6] "Something in the Way You Move" was released as a promotional single three weeks later, followed by "Lost and Found" on 23 October 2015 (2015-10-23) and "Army" on 30 October 2015 (2015-10-30).

Composition

"Something in the Way You Move" is an electropop song,[7][2] with a tempo of 108 beats per minute and it uses the chords A, B, and C#m.[8] The Guardian's Alexis Petridis noted similarities between the song and "Love Me Like You Do", another song off Delirium, saying it has "a virtually identical chorus"[9] Eve Barlow of Spin wrote the chorus is reminiscent of the '80s.[10]

Critical reception

The song received mixed to positive reviews. MTV was positive, labeling it 'pure pop bliss'.[2] Ian Sandwell of Digital Spy called it 'pure, unfiltered pop magic' and 'pop gold'.[11] Idolator's Bianca Gracie deemed it "vibrant" and warned not to be surprised if "its bright vibe ends up taking over the radio."[12] However, MusicTimes was negative, calling it 'generic pop' and saying there was 'nothing interesting'.[13] Hazel Cills of Pitchfork wrote the song is "a mighty fine song in a vacuum" but that Selena Gomez had already done something similar with "Me & the Rhythm".[14]

Music video

A lyric video for "Something in the Way You Move" was released on 9 October 2015, and features fans of Goulding dancing in black and white behind the song's lyrics in lilac.[15]
