Southern Union Company was an American natural gas utility and energy resources company based in Texas, operating as a subsidiary of ETP Holdco.

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Southern Union Co. is one of the nation’s leading diversified natural gas companies. The company owns and operates one of the nation’s largest natural gas pipeline systems with more than 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of gathering and transportation pipelines, and one of North America’s largest liquefied natural gas import terminals.

History

Southern Union was founded in 1929 by Clint Murchison, Sr. as a pipeline and utility company. The Arizona operations were sold to Citizens Utilities in 1991.[1] In 2003, the Texas utility operations were sold to ONEOK.[2] Missouri Gas Energy was sold by Southern Union Company to The Laclede Group, Inc. on September 1, 2013.[3][4]

ETP Holdco now owns a 100% equity interest in Southern Union Company. ETP Holdco is a holding company, owned 60% by Energy Transfer Equity and 40% by Energy Transfer Partners, and controlled through a majority board membership by ETP. ETP Holdco is engaged primarily in the transportation, storage, gathering, processing and distribution of natural gas.

The company was merged into Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line, Inc., a subsidiary of Energy Transfer Partners.

Pipelines

Southern Union’s interstate pipeline interests operate more than 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of pipelines that transport natural gas from major producing areas to major markets in the Southeast, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions. Southern Union’s natural gas transmission units include Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company, Trunkline Gas Company, Sea Robin Pipeline Company, Trunkline LNG Company (one of the nation’s largest LNG import terminals), and Southwest Gas Storage. Through CCE Holdings, LLC, Southern Union also owns an interest in and operates Florida Gas Transmission.

Southern Union Gas Services, with approximately 5,500 miles of pipelines, is engaged in the gathering, transmission, treating, processing and redelivery of natural gas and natural gas liquids in Texas and New Mexico.
