Species name is a technical term in biological taxonomy. Unlike the closely related term "specific name", it has the same meaning in the different nomenclature codes, and refers to the two-part name that is used for a species in binomial nomenclature.

For example, Silene latifolia is the species name for a plant that is commonly called "white campion", and Bos primigenius is the species name for a type of cattle commonly called "zebu". In these two examples, latifolia is the botanical "specific epithet" or "species epithet", and primigenius is the zoological "specific name".[1][2]
