Drt it is the real Dr. Brewer, implying one of the mutant plants might have survived, but this development is left hanging.
Dr. Brewer, an ex-botanist who was fired, has been acting strangely, spending nearly all his time in the basement of his house, working on his plant experiments. He had warned his children, Casey and Margaret, to stay out, but they sneak in and catch a glimpse of gigantic plants. They begin to worry even more when Margaret finds that her father has been eating plant food, sleeping on a layer of dirt, and bleeding green blood. After his baseball cap is knocked off to reveal leaves growing from his head, Dr. Brewer explains that he is working with genetic engineering, in order to create plant/animal hybrids.

Eventually they return to the basement and find another Dr. Brewer bound and gagged in the closet. The siblings and their mother learn that the "Dr. Brewer" they've been living with for some time, who had attempted to feed them plant food, is actually a nearly perfect plant/human clone of the real Dr. Brewer. Dr. Brewer had created it as part of an unknown experiment but it had betrayed him, locked him in a closet in the basement, and started making the aforementioned plant/animal hybrids to use as minions (presumably planning to build an army of them and strive for World Domination). The clone, along with most of the mutant plants, is destroyed by the real Dr. Brewer with an axe, while a few of the normal plants are moved into the garden.
Dr. Brewer's former boss who had also been captured by the "plant man" rehires him after he is freed and Dr. Brewer turns his basement into a game room during dinner.

In the final twist, which is a staple of the Goosebumps series, one of these plants speaks to Margaret, claiming that it is the real Dr. Brewer, implying one of the mutant plants might have survived, but this development is left hanging.

 • In the book as Margaret and Casey discover the basement, Casey takes his T-shirt off. In the episode, it was his sweater.
 • Casey retrieves his sweater before Dr. Brewer comes in, whereas in the book, Margaret saves him from a demonic plant.
 • Margaret discovers that Dr. Brewer is bleeding green blood out of his arm and has leaves on his head in the bathroom. In the book, Margaret only sees his green blood in the bathroom and Casey and Margaret discover leaves on his head when Casey accidentally tosses his cap off with a Frisbee.
 • In the book, Dr. Brewer tried to feed Margaret and Casey plant food for lunch, but in the episode, it was for breakfast.

 • The fake Dr. Brewer seems mean and angry in most of the episode. In the book, he seems more friendly and calm.
 • The fake Dr. Brewer is killed by weed spray in the episode by Margaret. In the book, he is sliced in half by the real Dr. Brewer.
 • In the end, a bunch of flowers claim to Margaret that one of them is her father instead of one flower as in the book.
