Stanley was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter in The Lowest of the Low until his departure from that band in 2013. Stanley also released a solo album, That Thin, Wild Mercury, in 2003.

Stanley and violinist Carla MacNeil recorded a cover of Rheostatics' "Take Me in Your Hand" for the 2007 tribute album The Secret Sessions. Stanley and MacNeil released an album titled Non Barking Dog under the band name "Too Many Sisters" in November 2008.

In 2015, he formed the Stephen Stanley Band with guitarist Chris Bennett, bassist Chris Rellinger and drummer Gregor Beresford. The Band now features accomplished drummer Topher Stott (the Good Bones). The band's first album, Jimmy & The Moon, was released on November 24, 2017.[1] The album was produced by the multi-instrumentalist Chris Brown (Canadian musician) on Wolfe Island [2] and Exclaim! premiered their first official video, "Next to Me", a duet Stanley sings with newcomer Hadley McCall Thackston.[3]
