Steve William Allen (born 17 March 1932, Bromley, Kent, England as Ian Allen Williams) is a British radio presenter on London station LBC 97.3. He lives in Twickenham, Middlesex.
Radio career
Steve has broadcast on LBC radio for over 30 years. He worked as a nightclub disc jockey where he met Dale Winton[citation needed] and subsequently joined the United Biscuits Network, a radio station broadcasting to workers in the United Biscuits' factories.[1] His voice was heard in Scotland, Liverpool, Manchester and London.
UBN closed in 1979 (following the Lorry Drivers' Strike during the Winter of Discontent) and he joined LBC as presenter of the Night Extra programme. 'The Night is Young' was the next series of programmes he presented and when LBC was separated into 1152 AM and 97.3 FM, Steve presented the afternoon show of 'London Talkback Radio' (latterly LBC News 1152) and 'Saturday Night Out'.
Steve has also worked for Blue Danube Radio in Vienna, a station sponsored by the United Nations. He was also the host of Crinkley Bottom radio on Noel Edmonds' Garden Party.
His current radio programmes are the early breakfast show between 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Friday, and breakfast on Sunday mornings from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. His other show for LBC, In Conversation, is broadcast on Sunday at 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Steve Allen's breakfast show is a humorous take on celebrity life.
In 2006 and 2007 he embarked on a live tour visiting theatres around the London area. After heavily promoting the shows on his radio programme, all dates sold out within a day of going on sale.
In 2009 and 2010 Steve continued his sell out 'audience with' stage shows at the Queen's Theatre in Hornchurch. He is supported by fellow LBC presenter Anthony Davis, who Steve describes as the 'best warm up act in the business'. Anthony also precedes Steve on LBC 97.3 daily, and refers to himself as the 'warm-up to the main attraction'.
Style of Radio Show
His rapid banter with his regular guests takes in news topics as well as incidents and irritations from his daily life.[2]
Steve portrays himself on the show as an abrasive character full of contempt for incompetent shop assistants and minor celebrities, especially those appearing on reality TV shows.[3]
Even a fellow LBC presenter has been known to be on the receiving end of Steve's comments. In a handover from former The Apprentice contestant James Max, after being introduced by James, Steve said "Oh go away, you boring old windbag!".[4] The following week James had been criticising a minor celebrity while reading the newspapers. During the handover Steve said "It's no good nicking MY act!".[5]
Regular guests include Julie Peasgood, Paul Savory, Darren Tossell, Nathan Morley, Jane Milligan, Allan Dodgeon, Roger Foss and John Warrington.
Steve's radio catchphrase is "Morning team!"
TV experience
Steve was one of five presenters of 5's Company.[6] a magazine programme which aired on Channel 5 when it launched in 1997. Other TV credits include Weather Permitting [citation needed]on BSB, Newman and Baddiel! on BBC, Entertainment Now on WTN[citation needed] and Night Male on UK Living.[citation needed]
Diabetes
Steve discovered he was diabetic [7] and has since promoted testing on and off air.
