SweetSexySavage is the upcoming debut studio album by American singer and songwriter Kehlani. The album is expected to be released on January 27, 2017 by Atlantic Records.[1] Kehlani started recording the album in April 2015,[2][third-party source needed] after the release of her mixtape "You Should Be Here". Work has proceeded into 2016 where she finished the album. Kehlani described the album of having three elements; Sweet, Sexy and Savage.[3] Before Thanksgiving, Kehlani released the video to the single, "Distraction."

Background and production

Recording started in Philly around Halloween 2015.[4] The album was announced to be arriving "soon" in mid 2016 by Kehlani on Twitter. Work continued into 2016 where Kehlani finished and since has passed it onto her label.

Singles

"CRZY" was released as the lead single from SweetSexySavage on July 15, 2016,[5] and peaked at number eighty-five on the US Billboard Hot 100. The second single "Distraction" was released on July 23, 2016. Its accompanying music video received over 2 million views in one day on YouTube.[6] The third single from the album "Advice"[7] was premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show on December 1, 2016.

Release and promotion

Kehlani announced the album's title on November 27, 2016 via Twitter.[8]

The album cover leaked on the following night in low quality with the announce of new single "Advice", to be released on December 2, 2016.[9] Kehlani revealed the album's cover on November 30, 2016 along with a mesage to fans – "Thank you to the fans for believing in me... for receiving me... for growing with me and giving me the confidence to keep going and get this album done. I hope you enjoy my journey, my growth, and my stories. SSS season."[10] The album was made available to pre-order on iTunes on December 1, 2016 along with the new single "Advice". SweetSexySavage is expected to have 19 tracks on the deluxe version.

On December 1, 2016, Kehlani premiered "Advice" on Apple Music. The song is pop-leaning ballad that finds Kehlani pleading with herself to take her own advice. "I was just out of a really bad relationship with someone who I really thought who was going to be the one person for me and ended up showing me so many times that he wasn't," Kehlani said, opening up to Zane about the making of this particular song. "It was really like, a healing thing rather than us just making a song".[11]
