A translation of a Russian Wikipedia article

[edit]

I originally translated this article in September of 2011 for an English-speaking online community interested in the battle of Stalingrad, and did a very thorough line-by-line translation with the disclaimer that every oddly unencyclopedic use of period rhetoric, weasel word, and pro-Soviet boast was the product of its source. It was only really meant to shed light on the history of a division little is written about in any language, and nearly none is written in English - and that is what this first draft here is meant to do as well. Since the unit has no English article still, I decided I'd use that old translation as the basis for a new article. I pruned out a few suspect facts and substituted biased terms like "Chekist" and "Hitlerite" for more neutral ones, but this is still very much a copy of the Russian article, complete with the original references, redundancies, and trivialities. I wholly invite other users to hack it to pieces and bring it up to code. D Boland (talk) 09:43, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I should probably also say HOW I translated it, right? I used a combination of Google Translate (because it's fast), a print Collins Russian-English dictionary, Wiktionary (those declension tables for every noun are a godsend, though maybe also a crutch), and my university material for Introductory Russian.
