[edit]The MPC name is 402 Chloe, not 402 Chloë. How should this be handled? Likewise for 404 Arsinoe, not 404 Arsinoë.
- 402 Chloë and 404 Arsinoë are correct and official spellings. It's MPC's "fault" that they don't add diacriticals in asteroid names. --Jyril 16:24, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Is there a more official source, or a document that has proper spellings including diacriticals?
- This site at Institute of Applied Astronomy in Russia looks fairly authoritative and has the list you asked: http://www.ipa.nw.ru/PAGE/DEPFUND/LSBSS/englenam.htm (now moved to http://www.ipa.nw.ru/PAGE/FUNDAMENTAL/LSBSS/englenam.htm ). The Heideberg University link seems dead: http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~s21/minor.planets/names.htm . Only official source that comes into mind are the Minor Planet Circulars but they are not public. --Jyril 20:54, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
I've added alternate spelling redirects from "402 Chloe" and "404 Arsinoe" to the appropriate pages. Hopefully that will make it easier for the next person who gets tripped up by the MPC names.
- Good, I forgot to do that by myself.--Jyril 09:25, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Egads, here's what I've run into... From your links (above) there is at least one minor planet (861 Aïda) misspelled without diacriticals. In fact, for this one, the redirect is FROM 861 Aïda TO 861 Aida, which is completely wrong. (Should I switch them?) I've also noticed there are at least two formats for orbital element tables (compare 23 Thalia with 24 Themis). I've already written a robot to fix the Previous/Next footers to the standard MinorPlanet_Footer, and I'm tempted to write a robot to go in and "fix" all of these other problems as well. Thoughts?
