[edit]The first PC operating system to integrate such technology was Windows 2.0. Windows 2.0 was not an operating system. Windows didn't become an OS until Windows 4 (95/98) But then, if it allowed access to extended memory while the underlying OS didn't, it wasn't a shell either. --Taejo 09:36, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
True not an OS in the true sense of the word, neither a graphical shell. Still, programs/applications written for it specifically could not run inside DOS alone. Maybe to satisfy semantics you'd like to call it a desktop environment, as it is not a shell? Personally, I think calling it an OS is acceptable even though it relied on DOS for hardware access for the most part (although altered that access system to suit the needs of the Windows Environment). --Hauger 20:54, 10 Aug 05 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hauger (talk • contribs)
