i remember watching the episode where shintaro faces kongo on a boat. he was able to would kongo across the face, after which kongo either falls or dives backward into the water. i do not remember if kongo is presumed to have died or escaped. Thanks for your memories of that episode, Cgdmnky. Unfortunately, I don't have any memory of that duel myself (I was very young when I watched the series). My source for info on the duel on the boat was Nikki White's 'The Samurai - cast & characters' webpage. But perhaps the ending was more "open-ended" than how I've written it up.
