The definition of allied health professional here is not in keeping with use of the word in much of the English-speaking world. It requires review. --Daveb 06:28, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge

[edit]

I notice a proposal to merge this with Health professional has been posted.

Allied health is a distinct subset of the health sector with its own set of issues. The term is used to distinguish clinical professions other than medicine and nursing professions.

Whilst this article needs some serious help (for a start, many of the "professions" listed as being within "allied health" are not really allied health professions at all, but rather ancillary services or technicians), I feel it should remain separate from Health professional unless people also feel Medicine and Nursing should be merged.

The articles for Medicine and Nursing clearly cover two different topics, but the articles for Allied health and Health professional/Health profession currently do not. If there is information that could be added to either or both to warrant the split, please do add it. Right now, there isn't a sufficient distinction showing that an allied health professional is not a health professional.
If this article is kept separate, I'm also wondering if it should be renamed Allied health profession. The current article is entitled Allied health but there is no definition for "allied health". Edwardian 04:12, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this article does not currently address to topic of allied health and needs work. The article should explore the topic of allied health just as the articles on the other two major divisions of healthcare — nursing and medicine — explore those areas. I will attempt to rework this article in the coming weeks to bring it up to standard (something I have been meaning to do for a while since I came across this article).
I suggest leaving the title as it is, as there is a distinction between the area and those that work in it. Just as there is the article Medicine and then separate articles on the professionals that work in the field (ditto for Nursing, Nurse, etc) there should be an article on the broader topic of allied health.

FYI, there is an article entitled Allied health professions so I've changed the merge header. (I realize you still don't agree with it.) Edwardian 21:18, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Since there is an appropriate article to merge with, I am willing to do the merging. If I don't get any response within a day or two, I'll do it. -- Fyslee 19:36, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
