Documentary?
[edit]If it is a documentary, why does Cannes' page for the film has a casting list showing different names for actors and characters? Maybe they're the roles they play in the film which An Unfinished Film documents the making of? But even if so, doesn't one expect not only the cast but crew members to appear in the documentary? Or is it a "hybrid" documentary like Four Daughters? Nardog (talk) 12:49, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
- As of now, the L'Œil d'or nomination seals the deal for its genre. For what i gathered, the original production was halted ten years prior the pandemic, probably 2010, and was highly political, like all other Lou Ye films, but i really don't know how the scenes shot before the Chinese lockdown will be used, the original shooting and the early January 2020 shooting took place near by Wuhan, more scenes were shot during the quarantine in the hotel which the cast and crew were confined. The only official image available at the cannes website you linked is from the editing room, with Ye chatting with one of the main actors. I don't think it'll be anything close to Four Daughters, since Ye is not recreating anything with the actors. Martineden83 (talk) 20:29, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
- Per the pressbook, it's "semi-fictional".
The short-term shoot during the hotel quarantine was similar to a traditional film production with written shooting outlines and camera placement diagrams, but the later shoot was different, as the roles of the crew were twofold; they played their roles both in front of and behind the camera. They are making a film while also filming themselves making a film.
Sounds very meta. Nardog (talk) 19:04, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
